Legislative Decree 81/08 (Italian Consolidated Law on Health and Safety at Work) sets out the obligations for the employer who is required to assess the risks within the workplace, adopt measures to prevent accidents and manage emergencies promptly, especially in the most critical environments (such as explosive atmospheres).

This is a critical aspect, especially in cases of isolated workers or those in specific operating conditions, who must be equipped with appropriate communication systems for the detection of “man down” or in the event of illness.  The employer is also obliged to equip workers with personal protective equipment (PPE).

The “Man Down” monitoring devised by the Filippetti Group is the result of the great experience gained in projects developed in the field of Safety, aimed at guaranteeing greater safety to workers and companies at the workplace.

Through the integration of extremely sophisticated localisation technologies, a state-of-the-art networking infrastructure (Smart Network) and a centralised platform for active collection and monitoring (IoT Smart Platform), Filippetti Group is able to offer an extremely reliable and powerful solution, which can be used in any working environment, including explosive atmospheres, thanks to ATEX-certified devices.

OPERATING PRINCIPLES

Monitoring of the signal emitted by the innovative SaveMENOW personal protective equipment, manufactured by the Filippetti Group, which is carried out through the SmartNetwork and sent to the IoT Smart Platform, facilitates the location of personnel with an extremely high degree of accuracy (< 50 cm).  This is very important in cases of serious events such as infrastructure collapses or landslides, which can cause them to be buried, and it is also crucial to providing rescue teams with accurate information on the position of those involved.

The performance of the Man Down solution is such that it is not comparable to other “man down monitoring” systems currently on the market.

MAIN ADVANTAGES

  • Usable in any context: even in areas that do not normally have Wi-Fi coverage (or a mobile signal), thanks to the use of Filippetti’s Smart Network technology and SaveMENOW GPS.  The SmartNetwork is a pervasive mesh network powered by long-lasting batteries (up to 10 years), and therefore it can provide coverage even in areas normally shielded from radio waves (compartmentalised areas, underground areas etc.).
  • Detailed localisation: a localisation accuracy down to less than 50 cm enables the location of the position right down to a single room. Commercial solutions use technologies that allow localisation only by macro-areas (by floor rather than specific area).
  • Multifunction sensors: the SaveMENOW PPE is not only equipped with motion sensors, but also with sensors that facilitate the identification of an individual’s posture and sudden loss of altitude, thus minimising the risk of incorrect readings of events;
  • Multiple event confirmation: if the operator is also wearing other sensors (e.g. tags that allow monitoring related to the correct use of the PPE or other equipment) it is possible to integrate the data collected from those sensors into the analysis model, thus substantially eliminating the risk of false alarms.
  • Use Case scenario: option of carrying out a system reactivity calibration to each single case of use depending on the variables to be monitored (movement, posture, rapid loss of altitude) and then customisation of the sensor’s response according to typical activities or expected scenarios.
  • Long LifeTime Devices: the SaveMENOW wearable device supplied to the operator is rechargeable and guarantees continuous operation for about one month (depending on the use cases).
  • Functionality integration: possibility of integrating additional Safety functions within the same device and service to monitor the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment or other equipment.

MONITOR THE USE OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) REQUIRED BY SAFETY REGULATIONS WITH SAVEMENOW AND A SERIES OF SENSORS CONNECTED TO IT, IN AN INNOVATIVE WIRELESS BODY AREA NETWORK.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

This solution developed by the Filippetti Group was created to facilitate and support, in a digitalised way, the implementation of and compliance with the most appropriate protection and prevention procedures in the field of safety, which involve the need to identify personal protective equipment (PPE) and verify its correct use by workers in risk areas.

OPERATING PRINCIPLES

By using the innovative SaveMENOW PPE (worn by the operator), which is integrated into Filippetti Group’s localisation technology, a local wireless network can be created that operates near the SaveMENOW device, creating a Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) to which the PPE Tags are connected, these being inserted into the protective helmet, safety shoes, gloves, and gas masks, etc.
The active technology devices, besides signalling the presence of the associated object near the SaveMENOW PPE, are also able to monitor its correct use by measuring its movements and position with respect to the SaveMENOW and the ground, as well as the internal pressure profile linked to the operator’s respiratory activity, if gas masks are used.
If one of the required devices is missing or is not used correctly (e.g. helmet in hand instead of worn correctly), this is registered by the SaveMENOW, which transmits the information to the IoT SmartPlatform to manage the event and its alarms.
The PPE tags are also available in a version certified for use in high-risk explosive atmospheres (ATEX).

GENERAL OVERVIEW

In order to ensure that the most appropriate authorisation and protection/prevention procedures are applied and complied with based on specific areas of operation, the perimeter of the areas to be monitored must be defined.

The devices used in the solution developed by the Filippetti Group can be placed without needing any installation work (wiring) as they are wireless, plug & play, and powered by long-life batteries (up to 10 years).

OPERATING PRINCIPLES

The beacon, a proximity locator used in the SmartNetwork, allows the identification of a “logical” space within which the SaveMENOW PPE, carried by the personnel, can be identified and recognised. If extreme localisation accuracy (<50cm) is required, for example to locate two adjacent workstations in an open space, the “Anchors” precision references can be used which provide the SmartNetwork – and the IoT Smart Platform – with all the data necessary for extreme accuracy localisation in a given area using UWB technology.
Finally, to verify the unauthorised presence of personnel (i.e. those not equipped with identification tags) infrared PIR sensors are available to signal the presence of a “hot body” within the sensors’ range of action to the platform.

The Violated Area solution enables the easy monitoring of production areas (or outdoor work areas) in order to identify any unauthorised access; it offers the following benefits:

  • Easy installation and configuration: based on wireless and plug & play devices powered by long-life batteries (up to 10 years);
  • Accuracy: thanks to the use of both indoor and outdoor location technology, even in the presence of metal obstacles that would make the GPS useless;
  • Safe: ATEX-compliant for use in areas with explosive atmospheres
  • Modular and adaptive: uses the localisation of compatible wearable devices, but it also recognises the presence of personnel without identification tags;
  • Dynamic: reference points can be mobile and therefore can be repositioned;
  • Multi-scenario: it is the ideal solution for moving construction sites or work areas with frequent layout changes.

THE SOLUTION FOR EFFECTIVELY MONITORING AND MANAGING EVACUATION PROCEDURES IN THE EVENT OF AN ALARM OR INCIDENT.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Filippetti Group’s solution ensures the proper conduct of personnel evacuation procedures in case of an emergency in large and complex work environments such as construction sites or production facilities.

OPERATING PRINCIPLES

In case of an emergency, each operator that is equipped with a SaveMENOW PPE will receive an alarm signal (light signal and vibration). The operator will be “followed” in every move, both indoor and outdoor,  thanks to the SmartNetwork infrastructure, in order to verify the fastest route to safe muster areas.
This detection will provide the Emergency Manager with an aggregate real-time image of the evolving situation on the field,  which can be viewed through the appropriate control Dashboard that is available in the IoT Smart Platform.
Through the automatic roll call function the operators that are not yet registered in the safe areas will be highlighted on the map, allowing a possible intervention by safety personnel or specific recovery teams.
Integration with the Violated Area solution facilitates the highlighting, for each monitored area, of the presence of  authorised or unauthorised personnel in order to also manage any individual present who is not equipped with our devices.

SaveMENOW PPE, UWB technology anchor locating devices, as well as passive infrared sensors (PIR) are also certified for use in areas with an atmosphere at high risk of explosion (ATEX).

The solution developed by the Filippetti Group for monitoring operational procedures in the area of personnel safety, facilitates the verification of the correct sequence of activities that personnel are required to perform in order to maintain maximum safety in particularly critical scenarios, such as operations in confined areas or at heights on pylons. This solution makes it possible to significantly reduce the number of accidents resulting from incorrect manoeuvres and, at the same time, to raise staff awareness and instruct them in the correct procedures.

OPERATING PRINCIPLES

This solution requires the use of Filippetti Group’s SaveMENOW device and of a series of sensors (tags on the PPE worn by the operator) connected to it in an innovative Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN). This set of technologies allows real-time verification of the implementation of the most appropriate protection/prevention procedures, identification of the PPE worn, and verification of its correct use, with respect to:

  • its activation sequence (use) within the specific procedure;
  • the sensors’ position in regard to each other, through step-by-step validation of the PPE by the workers, in accordance with the relevant user manual.

The “Permit to Work” solution developed by Filippetti Group allows an increase of the work safety levels in production environments.

Permit to Work enables the user to census requests for intervention, analyse the preparation and proper allocation of maintenance activities to companies or third-party suppliers, thus ensuring the application of the most appropriate protection/prevention procedures in order to avoid intervention conflicts and interferences.

OPERATING PRINCIPLES

The software which makes up the Permit to Work solution natively integrates with the SaveMENOW device, PPE monitoring, SmartNetwork and localisation technology,  and not only controls the planning of the work but also ensures that it is performed in total safety. By assigning  SaveMENOW PPE to the intervention personnel, it therefore becomes possible to detect their presence in the assigned zones with absolute precision, as well as to monitor key safety aspects.

The sensors used are ATEX-certified for use in areas with an atmosphere at high risk of explosion.

The Permit to Work solution allows you to digitalise and centralise control operations and issue the necessary permits for maintenance activities, offering the following main advantages:
